1)     Go to your Windows Desktop screen and click open My Computer window. 

2)     Choose the hard disk volume (C- drive, D-drive or etc.) that you would like to scan and repair. 

3)     Next, go to the top bar of the My Computer window and click on the File menu. 

4)     Click the Properties command to open the properties dialog box of the selected hard disk volume. 

5)     On the Properties dialog box, select the tab named Tools

6)     Click Check Now in the Error-checking section. 

7)     Ensure that the Automatic File System Errors is selected.  

8)     Select the Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors check box and then click Start

 

 

It is also always a good idea to prevent bad sectors from occurring by performing regular preventive maintenance on your hard drive. You can achieve this by using two simple utilities provided with your operating system. These utilities are: 

 

a)     Disk Cleanup: This utility helps you free up important disk space and makes your system more efficient by getting rid of unnecessary files. You really should run this utility at least once a month. 

b)     Disk Defragmenter: This Windows tool help makes your hard disk continual and systematic. You must use this tool at least once every three months to ensure optimal performance. 

 

 

There is another more widely-used option for performing bad sector repair and that is to deploy a good quality, third-party, hard drive bad sector repair software. These software tools are usually more effective and much faster in diagnosing and repairing the bad sectors than the Error-checking utility present in the Windows operating system.
