How to Repair Boot Windows
XP

XP PC to boot up, or if it just freezes at start-up it is time

Use Windows XP Startup Disk
Windows XP startup disk is a floppy disk that enables you can
use to boot your PC by bypassing the boot files on the active
partition and try to start your PC normally. To create a
startup disk, insert a new floppy in the floppy drive and then
copy the following files to it:

Boot.ini

NTLDR
·
Ntdetect.com

Start Your PC Using Last Known Good
Configuration
The last known good configuration feature enables you to
reverse any changes that might have caused problems in the
CurrentControlSet Windows registry key. This key comprises
settings related to hardware and drivers on your PC. To start
your PC with last known good menu, restart your PC and after
the beep, press F8.
In the Windows Advanced
Options menu, scroll down and select the Last Known Good Configuration
option and press Enter. This method can be used only once.
If it fails to repair boot Windows XP in the first attempt, you
need to move to the next method.
3.
Perform System Restore
System Restore is a built-in Windows XP utility that by default
takes regular snapshots of your system configuration data both
on daily basis and before any major changes is made to the PC.
To use system restore to fix boot Windows XP, restart your PC
in Safe mode, open Start menu, point to
All Programs, point
to Accessories and
then in the System
Tools folder, select Safe mode. In the
System Restore
wizard, ensure that Restore My Computer To An
Earlier and then click Next to start the restore
process.

Repair Problems With Master Boot Record
Master Boot Record or MBR is the first sector of your hard
disk. This sector is comprised of information that helps start
the Windows boot process. If MBR is corrupt, your Windows will
not boot. To fix MBR, perform the following
steps:
a.
Insert your Windows XP setup disk in the CD/DVD drive and boot
your PC with it.
b.
At Welcome to Setup
screen, press the R
key to start Recovery Console.
c.
If required, choose your operating system and provide your
administrator username and password.
d.
At Recovery Console command prompt, type Fixmbr [deviceName] and press
Enter. Here,
deviceName is the path of the drive to which the MBR
needs to be written. For example, for C drive, you need to type
\Device\HardDisk0
5.
Fix Boot.ini Problems
Boot.ini file is used by the Ntldr program to find out the
location of Windows files and options that need to be enable to
allow Windows to load. Problems with this file will prevent
your Windows XP PC from booting up.
You can repair the boot.ini file by using the Bootcfg tool.
This tool runs from the Recovery Console.
Here, are the steps:
1.
Start Recovery Console.
2.
Type bootcfg
/parameter
and then press Enter.
3.
You can choose from the following parameters:

/Add
: Scans and chooses Windows installations to add to the
boot.ini file.
·
/Scan
: Scans for all installation of Windows on your
computer.
·
/List
: Displays all Boot.ini entries.
·
/Default
: Sets the default operating system to boot.
·
/Rebuild
: Recreates the complete boot.ini file.
It is important to note that quite a few Windows XP errors are
known to be generated from Windows registry problems. To
prevent these issues, and to specifically carry out repair boot
