Causes of MS Access Database Corruption

The following are some of the common causes of MS Database corruption:

·         Mdb file is shared among multiple users.

·         PC is turned off without closing the Access file.

·         Power issues such as dips, brown outs, and spikes.

·         Hardware problems such as device conflicts, overheating, and incompatible components.

·         Application crashes that may cause problems with other application software running on the PC.

·         Problems with network components such as cable connecters, hubs, switches, network adaptors, and improper cabling.

·         Not enough space on the hard disk to store files.

·         Different MS Access Service Packs on different computers accessing a particular file.

If you use MS Access a lot to manage your databases, it is essential that you take care of the issues listed above to prevent database corruption issues.

 

How to Repair Database Access Problems

It is not always possible to recover a corrupt MS Access database. However, at times, the following two methods work and enable you to repair database access corruption issues:

 

Method 1: Use Microsoft Access Repair Feature

  1.   Start the Mircrosoft Access application

      2.       In the blank MS Access window, display the Tools menu and then select Database Utilities.

3.       Select the  Compact and Repair Database…  command.

4.       In the  Database to Compact From  dialog box that is displayed, navigate to your corrupt MS database and select it.

5.       Click the Compact button.

6.       In the displayed Contact Database Into  dialog box, type that name for the new database and then click the Save button.

 

The database will try to recover itself. If the recovery is successful, open the new file in which you saved your database to ensure that it is fine. If this method fails, you may try to use the next method to recover your file.

 

Method 2: Import information from a corrupt Access file to a new file

1.       Start the Microsoft Access application.

2.       Select the  Blank Access Database  link in the right panel  and click  OK  .

3.       Give your new database a new name and then click Create.

4.       Display the File menu, select  Get External Data  , and then select the  Import  command.

5.       Navigate to your corrupt MS Access database file, select it, and then click Import.

If the Imports Objects window displays, your database will be imported. Otherwise, it will not be possible to recover your file.

6.       On the Tables tab in the Import Objects window, click Select All.

7.       Repeat step 6 for all other tabs in the Import Objects window and then click OK.

 

Note  : You may have to provide Banner password if your tables are linked to it.

 

This completes the Database Access Repair process. The content of your corrupt database should now appear in the new file.

 

Corrupt files may also be a result of problems in the Windows registry because all configuration information of your software and hardware is stored within it.
